Many like to make new resolutions to enrich their lives. The calculation is simple — if you start a new thing at the beginning of a year, you will have a clear idea of what you have achieved by the end of it.

“People want to start new things on days of special significance like Valentine’s Day, Christmas or Deepavali. New Year is also one such occasion when people want to pay attention to important things like marriage, buying a new vehicle, house etc,” says Ganesh S, a professional special valentines flowers.

Shubha N H, a professional who is entering wedlock this season, agrees that beginning a new life at the start of a new year means a lot to her.

“Every year, I do something special on New Year’s eve. But this year, the celebrations are doubled as my engagement and wedding are going to happen soon. When a wedding happens in the beginning of a year, that whole year remains special throughout our lives,” she says.

This year, her resolutions and expectations too have undergone a major transformation. “Now I have started thinking about my husband and me rather than just myself. I see both of us as one family. By the end of 2012, I hope we will understand each other well and make a good family,” she hopes.

Alisha Chinappa, a financial analyst, got married in mid-December and says there are a lot of advantages about getting married in December.

“First of all, my company is closed during Christmas and I can save my leaves. Moreover, we can use our leftover leaves which otherwise would have been wasted because of marriage.

Even travel agencies offer a lot of package trips during this time and we can go to some of the most happening places to celebrate New Year post marriage. Since marriage is the most important event in one’s life, it becomes more memorable when it falls on special days. Even for the others, it becomes easy to remember our anniversary. So we can get a lot of anniversary wishes every year,” she says.

She also says that this time due to the non-availability of a good muhurtam, many of her friends had to postpone their weddings. “I am lucky in that sense. My friends who wanted to have their wedding during this season didn’t get a suitable date as this is not an auspicious month. So they are holding it during Makara Sankranti which is also a special occasion,” she says.
